The M13A1 CBRN filtration system is the larger of the two individual distribution CBRN systems used by the U.S. military today. In the M13A1, a filter unit supplies filtered air to vehicle crewmembers via hoses, providing protection against CBRN agents.

This unit has been in use by the U.S. Army for over 30 years. It is used as a backup CBRN system in many armored vehicles and as the primary system in vehicles when positive cabin pressure cannot be maintained. Each M13A1 provides purified air for up to five people when used in conjunction with protective masks. Multiple M13A1 filter systems may be used when more than five people require protection.

The M13A1 filter system consists of an M1A1-19 pre-cleaner and particulate filter assembly, M3 heaters, hose assemblies and installation hardware. The M1A1-19 contains the blower, dust separator and particulate filter. Two M18A1 gas filters are used in conjunction with the main M1A1-19 unit.

The system is mounted inside the vehicle and contaminated air is pulled into the M1A1-19 unit where it passes through an M19 particulate filter. The M19 removes toxic particles and aerosols at an efficiency rate of 99.97% at .3 microns. Airflows out of the M1A1-19 unit to one of two M18A1 gas filters, which removes gaseous contaminants from the airstream. Lastly, the purified air is distributed via a network of ducts and hoses to the individual crewmember. The M3 heaters, located between the distribution duct and the last segment of hose prior to the final connection to the mask, warms the air to comfortable levels during cold weather operation.
